Africa Indigenous Women Organisation of Southern Africa

The Africa Indigenous Women Organisation of Southern Africa (AIWO-SA) is a regional chapter of the umbrella organisation based in Nairobi, Kenya. AIWO-SA is a regrouping of indigenous women non-governmental, community-based, faith-based and related grass-roots organisations in Southern Africa that represent and undertake economic, social and cultural as well as political activities for the benefit of their members.

The Africa Indigenous Women Organisation of Southern Africa (AIWO-SA) is a regional chapter of the umbrella organisation based in Nairobi, Kenya. AIWO-SA is a regrouping of indigenous women non-governmental, community-based, faith-based and related grass-roots organisations in Southern Africa that represent and undertake economic, social and cultural as well as political activities for the benefit of their members.

Enhancing and strengthening the capacity of indigenous women in Southern Africa by providing them the platform and framework for participation; socio-economic and cultural and political participation as well as upholding and protecting their fundamental rights and freedoms.

Empowerment and improvement of livelihood for indigenous women within the Southern Africa region

AIWO-SA’s core values are embedded in the conviction that the indigenous women of Southern Africa are equal in dignity and worth to all other peoples, and in accordance with the right of all peoples to be different, are entitled to consider themselves different, and be respected as such.

Services

Organisational Objectives

The operations of AIWO-SA shall be guided by the following organisational objectives:

A)

To lobby for, promote and defend the rights and special interests of the indigenous women of Southern Africa by such lawful means, including but not limited to establishing watchdog committees for this purpose.

B)

To promote, support and lobby for the recognition of indigenous languages and identity as well as the preservation and promotion of progressive indigenous cultures to the benefit of the indigenous women of Southern Africa.

C)

To identify, assist and support the indigenous women of Southern Africa whose legal and other human rights are threatened or violated through unacceptable customary norms and practices such as genital mutilation, early or childhood pre-arranged and betrothed marriages and other forms of prejudices, discriminations, violence and biases against them.

D)

To promote and support the indigenous women of Southern Africa in the preservation, conservation and protection of their indigenous knowledge systems, natural and environmental resources through sustainable programming including research, documentation and other appropriate means.

E)

To support, lobby for and promote the empowerment, growth, sustainability and economic advancement of the indigenous women of Southern Africa.

F)

To empower, enable and strengthen the indigenous women of Southern Africa through targeted capacity building training to develop relevant skills and through workshops, seminars and conferences for the dissemination of knowledge.

G)

To promote, support and lobby for recognition and enforcement of the fundamental rights, including access to education, healthcare, adequate housing, water, food and social security for the indigenous women of Southern Africa and to design suitable programmes for the realization of this objective.

H)

To encourage, promote and support the active participation and involvement of the indigenous women of Southern Africa in relevant legislative, policy, governance and decision-making fora at the national and regional levels with a view to enabling equitable political representation for them.

To achieve the organisational goals and objectives, AIWO-SA shall strive to build fruitful collaboration with major stakeholders, including donor partners, academic institutions, government entities, regional and international organisations and other indigenous peoples’ movements.
