Programmes & Activities

AIWO-SA works to empower and strengthen capacity for the indigenous women of Southern Africa. The following are the major programmes and activities through which the organisation operates:

Advocacy and Lobbying

AIWO-SA’s core programme shall be Advocacy and Lobbying, intended to garner public support for and to influence legislation and decision making with recommendations on relevant policy actions to uphold the rights of the indigenous women of Southern Africa. The indigenous women’s groups are mobilised in this regard to actively engage in political activism and participation in the processes of decision making and policy formulation on the issues that affect them.

Workshops and Capacity Building trainings

The organisation runs regular targeted capacity building trainings that are designed to development specific skills and competences that can uplift the indigenous women of Southern Africa and enable them engage in a productive manner in the processes to advance their economic empowerment and sustainability.

The workshops and capacity building trainings focus on economic empowerment; entrepreneurship and job creation; environmental conservation; education and technological advancement; reproductive health, including HIV and AIDS; indigenous women’s rights and gender mainstreaming; and cultural preservation.

Seminars and Conference

Seminars and conferences are organised regularly on various themes relating to indigenous women’s rights with the purpose to disseminate knowledge on research-based findings on contemporary issues and relevant developments around indigenous peoples concerns generally. The seminars and conferences shall result in the publication of suitable materials for creating public awareness and as relevant tools for advocacy and lobbying.

Funding

AIWO-SA shall, as part of its objective to support its member non-governmental, community-based, faith-based and other grassroots organisations that represent and undertake economic, social and cultural as well as political activities for the benefit of the indigenous women of Southern Africa, source and make available adequate funding to sustain their project activities
